Slavery

Slavery is a widely practiced practice in the Old World. Virtually everyone of the merchant or noble classes will own at least one slave. The rights and privalages of a slave vary by region and owner. In some areas it’s purely up to the slave holder and slaves can be killed on a whim; in others slaves are able to purchase themselves out of slavery at the age of 30, must be paid a wage and are made to learn a trade starting at a young age to ensure their usefulness(and tax revenue) beyond being a servant once/if freed. Between these two extremes are a wide variety of levels of treatment, a slave will likely not know what to expect when initially taken/purchased.

Slave auctions are held on a regular basis in every major city, as often as once a week in the bigger centers, as new slaves and slaves that are no longer useful to the current owner are bought and traded.

Smaller villages and towns are often the targets of slaver raids, especially during the dry season when times are often desperate for those on societies fringes.
